Hi! My name is Emma Asbury and I’m a senior Classical Archaeology and Latin major at UMW. I’m looking forward to this class and getting to know y’all over the course of the semester!
To start off, this assignment definitely stressed me out, not going to lie. At the current time, I have been working on this assignment for 11+ hours and I feel like I should be farther along than I am, but that’s how it always is for everyone when they start something new…though the inner workings of the digital world aren’t entirely foreign to me. My dad is a freelance web developer, so I grew up learning things about code and website-building here and there. That almost made this first assignment more difficult for me though. Since I am more familiar with code (I’m not fluent in any language, but I do know a few things) than I am with WordPress, this assignment was incredibly frustrating for me. For example, it took me AGES to find a nice, simple theme for my website because they all came with more pages and widgets than I wanted. I finally settled on one (for now, at least), but by that point I realized that what I really wanted was to be given a completely blank canvas and build it from there using actual code. We can’t always get what we want and we have to learn to work with what we are given, which I imagine will be my motto throughout this course.
Setting up the social media wasn’t too difficult as I have been using many of them for years now, but posting things on social media always makes me feel awkward. I’m only really comfortable with posting pictures on Instagram because I’m actually quite proud of the photos I take (which you can see on my Flickr down below, which is just a link because it “couldn’t be embedded”). Being a photographer also made it a bit easier to customize my blog as I have a repertoire of some 4,000 photos that I’ve taken over the last 9 years. Currently, I only have one photo on my website, one that I took in Oxford, England, but I will definitely be changing the header photos for each page so it’s not just one photo for the whole website.
I can’t say exactly say that I’m proud of my work so far, but I know I tried my best and my best will get better over the course of the semester.
